3 Manufacturing Flaws Leading To Belt Failure

Belt failure is sometimes the result of a manufacturing flaw. To ensure the longevity and smooth operation of your belts, pay attention to production performance. Read below to distinguish between a few of the notable manufacturing flaws that can occur.

1. Spiral Run-Out

Spiral run-out occurs when the loops from one spiral do not match the loops of the corresponding spirals. This can lead to reduced belt life due to poor tracking, as well as excess stretch and camber. Spiral loops can begin to “grow” and lose their association with each other, especially between left and right-hand spirals. The result is severe run-out of up to 1 entire loop at the opposite end of the belt.

2. Spiral Twist

Spiral Twist is another manufacturing error than can lead to poor belt performance. Uneven pressures are developed within the spirals as they are twisted down flat and welded into place. As the belt is broken in, these uneven pressures work against each other and create many belt problems.

3. Mismatch Spiral and Crimp

Another severe error that can occur  is mismatch between spiral and crimp. Spiral loops must be aligned with the notches in the crimp. If they are not aligned, this will lead to many problems, including excess stretch, stress concentration points, difficulty in splicing, and tracking problems.


Any or all of these manufacturing errors could lead to premature belt failure and should be remedied if at all possible. Addressing the issues above can help avoid premature belt failure.

Another key to good belt performance is the inside dimension of a spiral. The lower the spiral profile, the better. This will allow for less stretch, less splicing, improved tracking and greater overall belt life.
